About the Assignments and Programmes
Braintec delivers consulting, advisory and implementation assignments across the Horn and East Africa. Its work spans market systems development, private sector development, enterprise support, institutional strengthening, investment readiness, inclusive finance and related development initiatives.
Assignments may involve coordination with enterprises, community institutions, authorities, development partners, financial institutions and other public and private sector stakeholders.
The Digital Systems, Innovation & Communications Associate supports the identification, adaptation, deployment and adoption of practical digital solutions for enterprises, water service providers and community institutions, while strengthening programme visibility, communications and knowledge sharing across Braintec’s assignments.
The Opportunity
Braintec is seeking a hands-on and versatile Digital Systems, Innovation & Communications Associate to support the identification, adaptation, deployment and adoption of practical digital solutions and technologies that strengthen the operations, service delivery, financial management and institutional capacity of Water Service Providers (WSPs), water-related SMEs, Community Water Management Committees (CWMCs), VSLAs, SACCOs and other community and market actors.
This is a cross-cutting enabling role working at the intersection of digital transformation, user adoption, innovation and programme communications. The Associate will work directly with programme teams and supported actors to translate operational needs into appropriate digital solutions, build user capability and promote sustained use of the systems introduced.
Reporting to the Business Intelligence & Analytics Specialist, the successful candidate will lead day-to-day deployment and user support for appropriate digital solutions and technologies including smart/digital water meters, prepaid or post-paid metering and billing solutions, customer and member management systems, digital payments, financial records, savings and loan administration, maintenance systems, and sensors or monitoring technologies that help water actors identify losses, improve network visibility and reduce non-revenue water. The role will also support programme visibility and communications through high-quality field content, stories, case studies, photographs, infographics, presentations and other knowledge and communication products.
Key Responsibilities
1. Digital Solutions Assessment, Deployment & Adoption
- Assess the digital needs, operational processes and user requirements of WSPs, SMEs, CWMCs, VSLAs, SACCOs and other supported actors, and identify appropriate technology solutions.
- Support selection, adaptation, configuration and deployment of fit-for-purpose digital systems, prioritising affordable, scalable and locally supportable solutions.
- Lead rollout of digital solutions for water metering and billing, customer management, revenue collection, digital payments, financial records, inventory, maintenance, service requests and other operational functions relevant to water actors and enterprises.
- Support assessment and deployment of smart/digital water meters, meter-reading technologies and integrated billing solutions that improve consumption measurement, billing accuracy, revenue assurance and customer transparency.
- Support deployment and user adoption of appropriate VSLA, SACCO and community-finance systems for membership records, savings, loans, repayments, transactions, reporting and basic financial administration.
- Support appropriate use of sensors, telemetry and monitoring technologies for flow, pressure, tank/reservoir levels, leakage or abnormal-consumption detection, with the aim of improving operational control and reducing non-revenue water where technically and commercially appropriate.
- Coordinate onboarding, user setup, migration of essential records and basic system configuration in collaboration with technology providers and programme teams where required.
- Promote practical integration of deployed systems into the day-to-day operating procedures of supported institutions rather than parallel or stand-alone technology use.
- Maintain a deployment register documenting systems and technologies introduced, including digital meters and sensors where applicable, users or sites onboarded, implementation status, support needs and agreed handover arrangements.
2. User Capacity Building & Technical Support
- Design and deliver practical user orientation, demonstrations and coaching for staff, management committees and community users adopting digital solutions.
- Develop simple user guides, job aids, SOPs and troubleshooting materials appropriate to different levels of digital literacy.
- Provide field and remote technical support during rollout and early adoption, troubleshoot routine system issues and escalate vendor/platform issues where necessary.
- Work with programme teams and supported actors to identify adoption barriers and implement practical corrective actions.
- Support establishment of internal system administrators or focal persons within supported institutions to promote local ownership and continuity.
- Promote responsible digital practices, including appropriate user access, password management, data privacy, backup and device custody.
3. Digital Innovation & Process Improvement
- Identify manual, inefficient or fragmented processes and service-delivery challenges that can be improved through digital solutions, appropriate technologies or process redesign.
- Scan and assess relevant digital products, technologies, platforms and service providers – including smart/digital metering, telemetry, sensor-based monitoring, mobile-enabled billing and other appropriate water technologies – for potential application across Braintec assignments.
- Support design and implementation of innovation pilots addressing water metering and billing, non-revenue water reduction, leakage or abnormal-consumption detection, service delivery, customer engagement, community finance, enterprise operations or institutional management challenges.
- Test solutions with end users, gather structured feedback and support iterative improvement before wider rollout.
- Document practical lessons on usability, affordability, scalability, interoperability, maintenance requirements and sustainability of digital solutions and technologies.
- Contribute to development of scalable digital models that can be replicated across actors, locations and assignments where appropriate.
4. Communications, Visibility & Digital Content
- Support implementation of programme communications and visibility activities in line with Braintec, client and donor requirements.
- Capture and develop high-quality field content including photographs, short videos, human-interest stories, success stories, case studies, beneficiary or actor profiles and implementation updates.
- Produce or support development of infographics, factsheets, presentations, digital briefs, social media content and other visual communication products that communicate programme activities, innovation, results and learning.
- Work with technical teams to translate complex programme, market systems, enterprise and digital-solution information into clear and accessible communication products for different audiences.
- Maintain an organised library of approved photographs, videos, stories, graphics, presentations and other communication assets with appropriate captions and contextual information.
- Support documentation and visibility of key events, field activities, trainings, actor engagements, innovation pilots and programme milestones.
- Ensure communications content follows applicable branding, visibility, consent, safeguarding, confidentiality and data-protection requirements before publication or external use.
5. Knowledge Management, Documentation & Coordination
- Document digital deployment approaches, user experiences, innovation cases, implementation lessons and examples of effective adoption for programme learning.
- Maintain current system documentation including configuration notes, deployment records, user guides, training materials and handover records.
- Coordinate closely with the Business Intelligence & Analytics Specialist on data architecture, integration requirements and information flows where deployed systems generate programme-relevant data, while programme performance analytics and dashboard ownership remain with the BI & Analytics function.
- Work closely with the Water Market Systems & BDS, Investment & Finance, Technical/O&M and regional teams to ensure digital solutions respond to identified actor and institutional needs.
- Coordinate with Technical/O&M specialists on technical specifications, installation requirements and operational use of meters, sensors and water-monitoring technologies; the Associate leads digital solution deployment and user adoption rather than civil or electromechanical engineering design.
- Support preparation of programme reports and presentations through provision of verified digital deployment information, field evidence, communication content and knowledge products.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of Braintec’s digital implementation and communications approaches based on field experience and user feedback.
Qualifications

- Practical familiarity with content-design and digital communication tools such as Canva, Adobe tools or equivalent platforms is desirable.
- Experience working with donor/client branding, visibility, consent and responsible communications requirements is an advantage.
- Familiarity with digital payments, mobile money and technology-enabled financial or member-management solutions is desirable.
- Previous experience working on donor-funded assignments in fragile or conflict-affected environments is desirable; experience in Somalia or the Horn of Africa is an added advantage.
Core Competencies
The successful candidate should demonstrate;
- Strong technical aptitude and hands-on ability to assess, configure, deploy and support practical digital solutions and appropriate technologies – including digital metering, billing and sensor-based systems – for non-technical users and institutions.
- Practical, solutions-oriented approach to technology deployment, user adoption, troubleshooting and field support.
- Good understanding of digital systems, user access, data protection, system documentation and basic integration principles.
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with water actors, SMEs, community institutions, field teams, technology providers and technical specialists.
- Strong writing, visual communication and digital storytelling skills, with the ability to translate technical information into clear and engaging content.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail in system documentation, content management and reporting.
- User-centred mindset with the ability to work effectively with people of varying levels of digital literacy.
