About Braintec Consulting Limited

Braintec Consulting is an emerging consulting and advisory firm delivering high-impact solutions across the Horn and East Africa. The firm specializes in Market Systems Development (MSD), Private Sector Development, Enterprise Competitiveness, Business Development Services (BDS), Investment Readiness, Inclusive Finance, Institutional Strengthening, Organizational Development and Public Sector Advisory.

Braintec partners with development agencies, INGOs, financial institutions and the private sector to design and implement sustainable, market-driven solutions that improve livelihoods, strengthen institutions and promote inclusive economic growth.

Braintec designs and implements interventions that strengthen market systems, improve enterprise performance, facilitate private sector participation, unlock investment and build sustainable business models for service delivery across Somalia.

About the Assignments and Programmes

Braintec delivers consulting, advisory and implementation assignments across the Horn and East Africa. Its work spans market systems development, private sector development, enterprise support, institutional strengthening, investment readiness, inclusive finance and related development initiatives.

Assignments may involve coordination with enterprises, community institutions, authorities, development partners, financial institutions and other public and private sector stakeholders.

The Risk, Compliance & Due Diligence Associate provides a programme-level control function to help ensure that actors engaged, supported, referred for financing or considered for partnership are appropriately screened, material risks are understood, and integrity or compliance concerns are identified and managed before programme support or investment facilitation progresses.

The Opportunity

Braintec is seeking a detail-oriented and field-oriented Risk, Compliance & Due Diligence Associate to support actor screening, Know Your Customer (KYC), due diligence, risk assessment and compliance checks across Water Service Providers (WSPs), SMEs, PPP operators, community institutions, service providers and other ecosystem actors engaged through Braintec assignments.

The position combines practical enterprise and investment risk assessment with proportionate compliance and integrity screening. The successful candidate will verify actor identity and ownership, assess financial, operational, technical and climate risks, identify red flags, maintain due diligence records, and work with BDS, Investment & Finance and Technical teams to ensure material risks are addressed before actors progress through programme support and investment-readiness pathways.

The emphasis is on practical programme delivery rather than a stand-alone corporate compliance function. Specialist legal interpretation, sanctions decisions, complex financial structuring or final investment decisions remain with authorised management, legal advisers and financial institutions as applicable. Reporting to the Investment & Finance Lead, the Associate provides the programme-level bridge between actor onboarding, risk management, compliance screening and the investment pipeline.

Key Responsibilities

1. Actor Onboarding, KYC & Integrity Screening

- Support identification, onboarding and verification of WSPs, SMEs, PPP operators, community institutions, service providers and other ecosystem actors engaged by the programme.

- Conduct proportionate KYC checks, including verification of legal/operating identity, registration or licensing where applicable, physical and contact details, ownership and control, authorised representatives and key management.

- Identify and document beneficial owners and controlling persons where relevant and obtain declarations on ownership, conflicts of interest and related-party relationships.

- Conduct proportionate screening for sanctions, politically exposed persons (PEPs), adverse information, fraud/corruption concerns and other integrity red flags in accordance with applicable programme and donor requirements.

- Maintain complete KYC and actor due diligence files, checklists and screening records, and flag incomplete, inconsistent or high-risk cases for escalation before further programme support or financing referral.

2. Enterprise Risk Assessment & Profiling

- Conduct integrated risk assessments covering financial, operational, , technical, commercial and climate-related risks.

- Collect and validate information relevant to risk profiling, including revenues, costs, cash flows, liabilities, arrangements, operating practices, service reliability and key dependencies.

- Apply risk assessment frameworks, scoring tools and risk-rating criteria to support consistent classification of actors.

- Identify material weaknesses that may affect programme eligibility, business sustainability, investment readiness, service continuity or responsible use of programme support.

3. Due Diligence & Investment Risk Analysis

- Support enhanced due diligence for actors progressing toward investment readiness, financing, commercial partnership or other higher-risk programme engagement.

- Review business, financial, and supporting documentation for completeness, consistency and material red flags affecting bankability or transaction readiness.

- Support the Investment & Finance team in preparing due diligence packs and responding to reasonable KYC/due diligence requirements from banks, MFIs and investors.

- Assess risk implications for proposed investment cases and support integration of risk considerations into financial models, financing structures and mitigation conditions.

- Escalate complex legal, regulatory, integrity, sanctions or investment-risk matters to the Investment & Finance Lead and authorised management rather than making final clearance decisions independently.

4. Programme Compliance & Control Support

- Support application of relevant programme, donor and Braintec requirements relating to actor eligibility, integrity, anti-fraud and anti-corruption, conflicts of interest, sanctions and responsible engagement.

- Maintain practical compliance checklists and evidence requirements for actor onboarding, due diligence and investment-readiness progression.

- dentify compliance gaps or exceptions and support development, documentation and follow-up of proportionate corrective actions.

- Support periodic refresh of KYC and due diligence information where an actor relationship is ongoing or risk circumstances materially change.

- Coordinate with programme management on safeguarding, data-protection or other specialised compliance referrals, without duplicating specialist safeguarding or legal functions.

5. Risk Mitigation, BDS & Cross-Team Coordination

- Translate risk and due diligence findings into practical mitigation actions in collaboration with BDS, Technical and Investment & Finance teams.

- Support actor-specific risk mitigation plans, including improvements to financial controls, revenue systems, record keeping, O&M practices and business continuity.

- Work with the Business Development & Investment Associate and Water Market Systems & BDS teams to ensure risk findings inform enterprise improvement plans and investment-readiness support.

- Follow up agreed mitigation actions and advise when material gaps remain unresolved or require management escalation.

6. Climate, Operational & Business Continuity Risk

- Assess climate and operational risks such as drought, system failure, supply disruption, security or other context-specific threats and their implications for service continuity and investment viability.

- Support development and review of practical continuity, contingency and risk-response measures for programme-supported actors.

- Identify concentration, dependency and operational vulnerabilities that could undermine enterprise sustainability or repayment capacity.

7. Risk, Compliance & Due Diligence Tracking

- Maintain programme-level risk, KYC and due diligence trackers showing screening status, risk rating, outstanding documents, red flags, mitigation actions and escalation status.

- Track material risks across the investment-readiness pipeline and flag emerging issues to the Investment & Finance Lead.

- Support post-financing or post-engagement risk follow-up where required, focusing on agreed risk conditions and material changes rather than duplicating enterprise performance monitoring owned by other programme functions.

- Ensure due diligence records are appropriately organised, access-controlled and retained in accordance with applicable programme requirements.

8. Documentation, Reporting & Knowledge Management

- Prepare concise due diligence summaries, risk profiles, exception notes and mitigation-status updates for programme decision-making.

- Document recurring risk and compliance patterns, lessons and practical mitigation approaches across programme corridors.

- Contribute risk, KYC and due diligence information to investment pipeline reviews, management reporting and donor reporting where required.

- Maintain confidentiality and appropriate handling of sensitive personal, ownership, financial and compliance information.

- Working knowledge of beneficial ownership, PEP/sanctions screening, conflict-of-interest identification and common fraud/corruption red flags.

- Working knowledge of climate and operational risk considerations as they relate to service continuity and investment viability.

- Previous experience working in Somalia or the Horn of Africa, including fragile or conflict-affected environments, will be an added advantage.

Core Competencies

The successful candidate should demonstrate;

- Ability to identify and document financial, operational, , integrity and compliance risks objectively.

- Good understanding of beneficial ownership, conflicts of interest, sanctions/PEP screening and common integrity red flags.

- High attention to detail and rigour in document review, data validation and record keeping.

- Strong coordination skills to work across BDS, Technical, Investment & Finance and programme operations teams.

- Clear written communication skills for due diligence summaries, risk documentation and exception reporting.
